Why Change Audio Playback Speed?

Changing the playback speed of audio has many practical and creative applications. Speed up a long lecture or podcast to save time. Slow down a fast guitar solo to learn every note. Adjust the tempo of a backing track for practice. Our Speed Changer tool processes the audio and exports a new file at the chosen speed — no need to change playback speed settings every time you listen.

Speed Up Audio (Faster Than Normal)

  • Podcast listening — Listen to a 1-hour podcast in 40 minutes at 1.5x speed. Most speech remains perfectly intelligible up to 2x speed.
  • Lecture study — Speed through recorded lectures at 1.5x or 2x to review material more efficiently.
  • Audiobook fast listening — Some listeners prefer 1.25x or 1.5x for audiobooks after getting used to the speed.
  • Video content creation — Speed up background audio to fit a shorter video duration.

Slow Down Audio (Slower Than Normal)

  • Music transcription — Slow down a fast passage to 0.5x or 0.75x to identify every note.
  • Ear training — Study chord changes and melodic movements in complex music at reduced speed.
  • Language learning — Slow down native-speed speech to catch every word and pronunciation detail.
  • Audio analysis — Slow down a short sound effect to analyse its character and components.

Pitch During Speed Changes

By default, our tool changes speed using time-stretching, which keeps the pitch at the original level. However you can optionally enable pitch-linked mode, where speed changes also affect pitch like a traditional record player — faster speed raises pitch, slower speed lowers pitch.

Supported Speed Range

Speeds from 0.5x (half speed) to 4x (four times speed) are supported. For speech, 0.75x to 2x produces natural results. Beyond 2x, speech may become harder to follow. Beyond 0.5x, audio may sound unnatural or robotic depending on the content and algorithm.

How it works

  1. Upload your audio file (MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, AAC, or M4A).
  2. Enter the desired speed multiplier (e.g. 1.5 for 50% faster, 0.75 for 25% slower).
  3. Choose whether to preserve pitch or allow it to change with speed.
  4. Click Change Speed to apply the effect.
  5. Download your speed-adjusted audio file.

FAQ

What speed range is supported?
Speeds from 0.5x (half speed) to 4x (quadruple speed) are supported.
Does changing speed affect pitch?
By default pitch is preserved. You can optionally enable pitch-linked mode where speed changes also shift the pitch.
What speed is good for listening to podcasts faster?
1.25x to 1.75x is comfortable for most speech. 2x is fast but still intelligible for most listeners.
What speed is good for slowing down music to learn it?
0.5x to 0.75x is good for studying complex passages. At these speeds pitch is preserved so the key is unchanged.
Will the file duration change?
Yes. A 10-minute file at 2x speed becomes 5 minutes. The same file at 0.5x speed becomes 20 minutes.
Is there quality loss from speed changes?
Time-stretching algorithms introduce minor artefacts at extreme speeds. Quality is best in the 0.75x to 2x range.
Can I change speed without changing pitch?
Yes. The default mode uses time-stretching to keep pitch constant while only changing tempo.
Is the tool free?
Yes, completely free with no signup required.
What format is the output file?
The output format matches the input format by default.
Can I use this to match music tempo to a video?
Yes. Calculate the required speed ratio and apply it to match the music duration to your video length.
