Adjusting Audio Volume Online

Sometimes a recording comes out too quiet — the microphone was too far away, the source audio was recorded at a low level, or the file just needs to be louder for comfortable listening. Other times a file is too loud and needs to be reduced to match other audio. The Volume Booster tool lets you increase or decrease the volume of any audio file by a precise number of decibels (dB).

Understanding Decibels

Decibels are the unit used to measure audio volume changes. The key things to know are: +6 dB roughly doubles the perceived loudness; -6 dB halves it. A change of +3 dB is just noticeable to most listeners. Changes of 1 dB or less are barely perceptible. Common adjustments are +3 dB to +10 dB for boosting quiet recordings, and -3 dB to -10 dB for reducing loud ones.

Avoiding Clipping and Distortion

When you boost the volume of an audio file, the audio waveform peaks get taller. If any peak exceeds the maximum digital level (0 dBFS), it clips and causes harsh distortion. Before boosting, check the current peak level of your audio using our Audio Info tool. If the peaks are already at -1 dBFS or higher, use the Normalize Audio tool first to bring peaks down before boosting, or use normalisation instead of a manual boost.

When to Use Volume Booster vs Normalize

Use the Volume Booster when you know exactly how many dB you need to add or remove, or when you need a consistent relative change across multiple files. Use the Normalize Audio tool when you want the audio to automatically reach a target loudness level (EBU R128 for broadcasting, or -0.1 dBFS for peak normalisation).

Common Use Cases

  • Making a quiet podcast recording louder before publishing.
  • Reducing the volume of a loud sound effect to match other elements in a video.
  • Increasing the volume of background music without distortion.
  • Batch adjusting multiple recordings to a consistent level before merging.

How it works

  1. Upload your audio file (MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, AAC, or M4A).
  2. Enter the volume change in decibels: positive to boost (e.g. +6), negative to reduce (e.g. -3).
  3. Click Boost Volume to apply the change.
  4. Download your adjusted audio file.

FAQ

How much can I boost the volume?
You can boost by up to +30 dB. However boosting beyond +10 dB often causes clipping unless you normalise first.
What is clipping and how do I avoid it?
Clipping happens when audio peaks exceed the maximum digital level (0 dBFS), causing distortion. To avoid it, check your file peak level first or use Normalize Audio instead.
Can I reduce (lower) the volume with this tool?
Yes. Enter a negative dB value such as -6 to reduce the volume by 6 decibels.
What is the difference between volume boost and normalisation?
Volume boost applies a fixed dB change. Normalisation automatically adjusts the level to a target loudness, which is smarter for broadcast work.
Is the quality affected by volume changes?
For WAV and FLAC, volume changes are applied without re-encoding, so quality is preserved. MP3 is decoded, adjusted, and re-encoded with negligible quality loss.
Can I boost volume without distortion?
Yes, as long as the boosted audio peaks do not exceed 0 dBFS. Use Normalize Audio first to find the safe headroom available.
How many dB is a significant volume change?
+/- 3 dB is just noticeable. +/- 6 dB is clearly noticeable. +/- 10 dB is a very large change. +/- 20 dB is extreme.
Is the tool free?
Yes, completely free with no account needed.
Does volume boost preserve metadata?
Yes. ID3 tags and metadata are preserved in the output file.
