What Are Audio Metadata Tags?

Audio metadata tags are information fields embedded inside an audio file that describe the content. When you see a song title, artist name, album artwork, or genre displayed in a music player or streaming service, that information comes from metadata tags stored within the audio file itself. Without proper metadata, music players display generic file names and tracks are disorganised and difficult to find.

Types of Metadata Tags

Different audio formats use different metadata systems:

  • ID3 Tags (MP3) — The most common metadata standard, used in MP3 files. Supports title, artist, album, year, genre, track number, disc number, comment, composer, album art, and many more fields. ID3v2.3 and ID3v2.4 are the most widely supported versions.
  • Vorbis Comments (FLAC, OGG) — A flexible key-value metadata system used in FLAC and OGG files. Supports the same common fields as ID3 plus custom fields.
  • iTunes Tags (M4A, AAC) — Metadata stored in MP4 atoms within M4A and AAC files. Supports the same common fields with excellent Apple ecosystem compatibility.

Why Edit Audio Metadata?

  • Music library organisation — Correctly tagged files display properly in iTunes, Spotify, Windows Media Player, and every other music player.
  • Streaming platform uploads — Uploading music to Spotify, Apple Music, or Bandcamp requires correct title, artist, and album metadata.
  • Podcast distribution — Podcast episodes need title, description, and episode number tags for directory listing.
  • Fixing incorrect tags — Downloaded or ripped music often has wrong, missing, or incomplete tags that need correcting.
  • Album artwork — Embedding album art in files ensures artwork displays correctly in every player without relying on folder images.

Fields You Can Edit

Our metadata editor lets you view and edit: Title, Artist, Album Artist, Album, Year, Track Number, Genre, Comment, and Composer. After editing, download the file with the updated tags embedded. The audio data itself is not changed — only the metadata is modified.

How it works

  1. Upload your audio file (MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, AAC, or M4A).
  2. View the existing metadata tags displayed in editable fields.
  3. Edit any fields: title, artist, album, year, genre, track number, etc.
  4. Click Save Metadata to embed the updated tags.
  5. Download the audio file with your updated metadata.

FAQ

What metadata fields can I edit?
Title, artist, album, album artist, year, track number, genre, comment, and composer. Album art embedding is also supported for MP3 and M4A.
Does editing metadata change the audio quality?
No. Only the metadata fields are modified. The audio data is untouched, so quality is perfectly preserved.
What metadata format do MP3 files use?
MP3 files use ID3 tags, most commonly ID3v2.3 or ID3v2.4. Both are widely supported by music players.
What metadata format do FLAC files use?
FLAC files use Vorbis Comments, a flexible key-value metadata system compatible with all major music players.
Can I add album artwork to my audio files?
Yes. You can embed album art images (JPG or PNG) in MP3, M4A, and FLAC files using the album art upload field.
Can I edit metadata in bulk (multiple files)?
Currently one file at a time. Upload and edit each file separately.
Is the tool free?
Yes, completely free with no account needed.
Will edited metadata be visible in all music players?
Yes. Standard ID3v2 and Vorbis Comment tags are recognised by virtually all music players and streaming applications.
Is my audio file kept private?
Yes. Files are processed securely and deleted within 12 hours. We never access your audio content.
Can I clear all metadata from a file?
Yes. Clear all fields and save to remove metadata from the file. This is useful for privacy or when starting metadata from scratch.
